The Geneva College community mourns the passing of the Rev. Dr. Ann Paton ‘50, professor emerita, who passed away on May 2, 2026, at the age of 97.
Paton served as an English professor at Geneva for 36 years, from 1958-1994. She was instrumental in establishing Geneva’s core curriculum and humanities program in 1968, alongside fellow professors Dave Wollman and Betty Douglas Asche. Paton received numerous teaching awards during her tenure at Geneva, and was awarded the Life G Award in 2019, the highest alumni distinction at the College.
“Dr. Paton was an exceptional teacher, mentor, and highly respected academic leader,” says Provost Melinda Stephens, PhD. “She impacted the lives of hundreds of students and has had a lasting impact on Geneva College, especially in our humanities program. Her legacy is deep and far-reaching.”
A western PA native, Paton was born in Lawrence County in 1928. Paton attended Geneva College and earned bachelor's degrees in both mathematics and English in 1950. She graduated as valedictorian of her class. Paton then earned a master’s in literature from the University of Pittsburgh, a doctorate in medieval English literature from the University of Colorado, and attended Trinity Episcopal Seminary. In 1991, she was ordained to the priesthood in the Episcopal Diocese of Pittsburgh, where she served for 26 years.
Paton was active in the Church of the Ascension in Pittsburgh, where she served as liturgical assistant for many years in addition to other roles. She was a spiritual director to many.
During her years as a high school English teacher (1950-1958), Paton was also senior class advisor, assistant drama director, and girls’ basketball coach. In 2024, she was inducted to the Beaver County Education Hall of Fame, honoring her impact as an educator.
Paton’s legacy at Geneva College and in western Pennsylvania remains. Her passion for education and the arts brought joy to many, notably through the establishment of Geneva’s core curriculum, which builds students’ capacity for practical reasoning, creative thinking, and personal character. She was known and loved by many, who will remember her impact on their lives for years to come.
