Two weeks after Geneva’s Homecoming & Family Weekend, we’re still enjoying the moments that made it memorable. Our photographer chose his top 10 photos — from candid family portraits to campus traditions and fireworks — that capture the moments that made the weekend special and the details that tell the stories.

Students at the Homecoming Pancake Breakfast

Photographers hunt for great light, and here that light falls on the essential of portraiture — the eye. I do not want to fake this golden glow in editing, I want to find it.

Again, the light makes the photo, even when it’s more subtle. Architectural photos can have emotion when the light brings the emotion along with it.

Geneva Marching Band Members

My interns and I look for candid portraits, because they tell stories unlike anything else. With this one, there’s just something about the strong Geneva gold — and fall colors — that guides your eye to the only visible face.

Geneva Family MomentThe fall colors and Homecoming tents compressed into layers in the background offer subtle storytelling. However, the focus is still on a simple family moment during a joyful day.

Turbo High-fives Kids During The ParadeTurbo being downtown — and the joyful experience that was for children — is a story in itself. This was my favorite moment of that story.

A Child Waving to a Beaver Falls Police Officer in the ParadeThis is simple, but when a photo can draw me into a subject without me seeing their face, I know the photographer is on to something.

Geneva Football Student Athletes

When things are moving quickly, I am looking for a well-exposed shot with tack sharp eyes. It’s a sweet feeling when you know you have just that.

President Troup on the Sidelines With Football Players

I enjoy watching and anticipating moments through the viewfinder. Here President Troup was encouraging a player, and we see this playful exchange as he walks away.

Fireworks Above Reeves Field

Capturing fireworks at this level is an inherently technical task, but Enoch just nails it year after year. I am giving bonus points for what we call “sunstars” on all the lampposts.
