There are questions every high school student (and their parents or guardians!) should be asking when considering a college education: Is it worth it? Can I afford it? How do I decide what to study? Geneva College leaders provide answers to some of these top questions and more in this series. Take a closer look with us.

How Do I Support My Student in the College Search?

The college search can be a meaningful — and sometimes emotional — season for both parents and students. As your child begins taking steps toward life after high school, you may find yourself wondering:

How do I support my student well while also giving them the freedom to grow?

First, give the process to the Lord. Ask Him for wisdom in difficult conversations, patience when you see things differently, and discernment as you seek to support your student. As hard as it is to loosen the control you have carried for so long, trust the Lord to be at work in both your life and your student’s.

A helpful step in the college search process is to begin by talking together about what matters most to your student. Encourage them to reflect on their goals, strengths, interests, and the ways they hope to grow.

You do not have to navigate this process alone. At Geneva College, our enrollment counselors seek to partner with students and families throughout the college search, providing encouragement, perspective, and support. Our desire is to help students think not only about college, but also about who God is shaping them to become.

Start honest conversations by asking for your student's insights first. Your role isn't about having every single answer, but rather offering the wisdom, information, and perspectives they might not have thought of yet. By doing this, you gently create the space they need to discover and shape their own priorities.

Most importantly, remember this process is about far more than choosing a college. It is an opportunity to walk alongside your student as they grow spiritually, academically, personally, and professionally. It is also a chance for your relationship to deepen as you learn to trust, listen, encourage, and release them more fully into God’s care and calling.

When the emotions feel overwhelming, remember the words of the Lord in Matthew 11:28, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” God holds both you and your student in His hands. You can trust Him with the journey, knowing that He is faithful to lead and equip your student for a life of faithful and fruitful service.
